New Cairo grew up as Greater Cairo expanded eastward, and most of it has been built within the last two decades. Most daily life — schools, gyms, supermarkets, cafés — happens inside compounds rather than on a traditional high street, so proximity to your specific compound's gate matters more here than in older parts of the city.

New Cairo is built around private cars; ride-hailing apps work well throughout the district, and most compounds run their own shuttle or minibus services. Public transport coverage is limited relative to older, denser parts of Cairo, so it's worth factoring commute time to work or school into any decision.
