Renting in Maadi: A Complete Guide

What makes Maadi different from Cairo's newer compounds, and what to know before you rent there.

A tree-lined residential street in Maadi, Cairo

An older district with a different rhythm

Maadi predates most of Cairo's newer eastern and western expansions, and it shows in the best way: mature trees, wider-than-average side streets for Cairo, and a long-established mix of Egyptian and international residents.

Because it grew organically rather than as a single planned compound, rental quality varies more from building to building than it does across most of New Cairo's gated developments. Two apartments on the same street can differ a lot depending on when the building was last renovated.

Old Maadi, Digla, and Zahraa El Maadi

Old Maadi (Maadi Sarayat) is the leafiest and generally most sought-after stretch, known for villas and low-rise buildings. Digla is denser and more built-up, with a strong everyday amenity base. Zahraa El Maadi tends to be more affordable while still being close to Maadi's core.

Getting around

Maadi's biggest practical advantage is the metro — Line 1 runs directly through it, making a car genuinely optional for a lot of residents, which is unusual in Cairo.
